THE
JAZZ / NEW / WORLD MUSIC LABEL ...the
Vancouver based label whose astonishingly high level output is expanding
the boundaries of new jazz
A Note on Super Audio CD: With 37 CDs appearing between 1992 and 2001, Songlines entered a new phase of its activities in the winter of 2001-2 with the release of its first two SACDs, using the Sony/Philips DSD (Direct Stream Digital) system. We have always placed a premium on good sound, a necessity to convey the subtleties of texture, timbre and timing which give life to jazz and other acoustic/electric music. The Super Audio CD is a medium that significantly surpasses the ability of the standard CD to represent the sound heard in the studio. With our current productions we are aiming for the highest sonic standards available in the SACD format, and wherever possible we will mix to multi-channel as well as stereo for the extra immediacy and involvement of surround sound as well as the expressive possibilities it makes available. The music comes first, however, and since there are still some practical limitations involved in DSD recording, a few projects will be released as regular CDs. Our SACD recordings will be available in hybrid SACD versions only, as the hybrid's CD layer is playable on all CD players and all but a few of the oldest DVD players. Our pricing will be kept as close to that of our regular CDs as possible, and because DSD-mastered CD sound is among the best available we believe we are offering consumers value for money in any case. But you really should check out SACD playback: even the least expensive players are quite impressive, all of them also play CDs, and there are now many "universal" players on the market that play DVDs, DVD-A, SACD etc.
