POOR BOY: SONGS OF NICK DRAKE
Robin Frederick
The fourteen tracks on POOR BOY: SONGS OF NICK DRAKE range from semi-faithful reproductions of Nick Drake's songs ("Fly") to a mere suggestion - if that - of the original ("One Of these Things First"). Fans of Nick's albums may not be attracted to this CD but those listeners who are interested in a little experimentation with their music, intrigued by the challenges posed by interpretation, or thirsting for unusual and unexpected voice/instrument combinations will find a treat here.
Bill Horist and Aiko Shimada's "Cello Song" is a successful blend of acoustic guitar finger-picking (very close to the original), a musical palette of electronic sounds, and a lead vocal with the folk purity of Judy Collins. The hypnotic quality of the original is highlighted and enhanced in the extended final section. The treatment "Parasite" receives at the hands of Friendly Science Orchestra succeeds for the same reasons as "'Cello Song." The original is given its full due but facets that were only subtly present or hidden are reveale |
